Using a pressure washer is as easy as spraying a hose... right?

Not quite. Pressure washers are much more powerful than your average garden hose, so before you try washing anything, you have to know what you're doing. We've put together this guide to help you learn the best home pressure washing tips you need to follow.

Let's get started below!
Get the Front Yard Ready for House Pressure Washing

If there's something near your house that you don't want to get wet, move it somewhere else. The spray of a pressure washer can reach farther than you might think, so it's better to be cautious. Cover your plants with a tarp to help protect them from any damage, and it's also a good idea to remove fragile light fixtures.

Make sure you turn off all the outdoor electrical components on your property. Mixing water with electricity can be dangerous, and if you aren't careful, you could end up hurting yourself.

Wear the Proper Safety Gear

Pressure washers are powerful. You should never turn it on unless you're wearing the proper safety gear, even if you don't think you'll need it. Put on the following things before you start:
  • Long, waterproof pants
  • Boots
  • Thick gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
You should also never mess around with a pressure washer. Even on low settings, a pressure washer can give you serious injuries, so never point it at other people or animals.

Pick an Out-of-the-Way Spot to Start

You'll want to start pressure washing your home in the back corner or some other place that's out of sight. This will give you a chance to test the pressure so you don't accidentally damage the siding.
Turn down your pressure washer to the lowest setting first and stand at least 10 feet away from the house when you spray. As you continue, you can increase the pressure and walk closer as needed. However, it's always better to start small so you stay on the safe side.

Work Your Way From the Bottom to the Top

You might be tempted to start at the top of your house by the roof and move down from there.

Don't do this.

If you start at the top, the excess water will run down the walls, which can make it harder to see where you've washed and where you haven't. You might finish the job only to realize you've missed a big section the next day.

Always keep your feet planted firmly onto the ground. Climbing a ladder might seem like a good idea for the higher sections of your house, but the pressure from the water can be strong enough to knock the ladder over, which can send you to the hospital.
